French Operators File Complaints Against 3G License Auction
Two of France's three mobile network operators have filed formal complaints against the regulator's upcoming 3G license auction. Both Vivendi and Bouygues Telecom have filed complaints with France's highest administrative court, the Conseil d'Etat over the reserve price being set for the license. more

France Launches Tender for Fourth 3G License
The French government has formally opened the bidding for the country's fourth 3G license, and set the reserve price at EUR 240 million (US$339 million). As expected, France Telecom says that it will appeal against the license fee, saying that it is too low compared to the 3G license fees paid by the incumbent operators. more

MobiNil Profits Down on 3G Costs and Debt Interest
Eygpt's MobiNil, which is in the midst of a tussle between Orascom and France Telecom has posted a 6% drop in first-quarter profits to EGP424 million (US$75 million) - below most analysts expectations. Imputed interest amounts relative to 3G installment payments charged during the first quarter amounted to EGP 29 million and higher interest costs are the main driver for the decrease. more

Bouygues Telecom Loses 3G License Appeal
The European Court of Justice has ruled that the French government was correct in retrospectively lowering the 3G license fees it charged to France Telecom and Vivendi's SFR. In 2000, the French government sold two 3G licenses to France Telecom and SFR for EUR4.95 billion each. A later attempt in 2002 to sell the remaining two licenses raised just EUR619 million from Bouygues Telecom. The fourth license remains unsold to this day. more

Egypt's Mobinil Does Not Expect a Profitable 3G Network
Egypt's Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (Mobinil) says that it does not expect to make a profit from its 3G network - and would not have brought the license had it not included an extension to the existing GSM license held by the firm. more

Vodafone Would Face $578 Million Fee To Upgrade To 3G In Egypt
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Vodafone Group would have to pay US$578 million to upgrade its second-generation mobile license in Egypt to a 3G license as a knock-on effect of the price paid by a rival for Egypt's third mobile license earlier this week. more
