After an expected post-holiday slump in handset shipments in the first quarter of the year, the worldwide mobile phone market grew at a respectable pace in the second quarter, with most vendors citing success in emerging markets. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 272.7 million units worldwide in Q2 '07, about 6.9% more than the quarter earlier, and 16.5% more than the same quarter a year ago. more

Sony Ericsson Opens Indian R&C Center

Sony Ericsson has announced that it is establishing a research and development unit for mobile phones in Chennai, India. The move follows closely on the company's January announcement of sourcing local manufacture of phones in Chennai with EMS partners Flextronics and foxconn; with a production target of 10 million units by 2009. The Chennai research and development unit will be headed by Anders Grynge, who was previously based at the Sony Ericsson R&D centre in Sweden. more

Sony Ericsson Plans to Manufacture Mobile Phones in India

Sony Ericsson has announced plans to manufacture mobile phones in India, through manufacturing agreements with Flextronics and foxconn, the company's global outsourcing manufacturing partners. Initially the focus will be to manufacture basic colour phones and mid-level music enabled phones, for local distribution. In addition to competitive pricing, these phones will offer customised features for the Indian market, such as local content and customised keypads. more
