Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells
Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network. more

FMC and Femtocells Heading Toward Full Convergence of Services
The hype surrounding fixed-mobile convergence (fmc) and femtocells continues to grow, but it is likely that neither technology will live up to expectations, says In-Stat. There is much interest in fixed-mobile service (FMS) enabled by femtocells and fmc among consumers, with the promise of more convenience and lower costs, the high-tech market research firm says. Femtocells are micro-base stations designed for home use that support mobile connectivity over the broadband facility. fmc uses Wi-Fi-enabled routers and handsets to carry mobile calls over a broadband connection. more

Femtocells to Dominate Fixed-Mobile Convergence Market
Mobile operators are now making key and far-ranging decisions about the future of their consumer fixed-mobile convergence services. While enterprise fmc services are clearly following the route of VCC- and SIP-enabled solutions, consumer fmc services will take one of two major paths, based on each mobile operator's view of the market, and the nature of its existing network assets. more
