Spansion and Samsung Settle Patent Litigation Lawsuit:

Spansion, the world's largest pure-play provider of Flash memory solutions, has announced that it has settled its patent litigation lawsuits with Samsung Electronics. As part of the settlement, Samsung will pay Spansion US$70 million and Spansion and Samsung Electronics Company have exchanged rights in their patent portfolios in the form of licenses and covenants subject to a confidential settlement agreement.  more

Plastic Fantastic - Future Phone Memory Could be Made from Plastic

Researchers at the Zernike Institute of Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen have developed a technology for a plastic ferro-electric diode which they believe will achieve a breakthrough in the development of ultra low-cost plastic memory material. Their findings will be published in the July edition of Nature Materials, a publication of the leading scientific journal Nature.  more

Flash Memory Will Still Dominate Mobile Phone Storage in 2012

HDD solutions will have a small but notable market opportunity in handheld devices over the next few years, but Flash memory will continue its dominance in mobile phones, according to a new Parks Associates report. The report finds 99% of mobile phones will have a Flash memory solution through 2007, dipping to 96% by the end of 2012. This slight shift is due to a small but emerging market for hard disk drive (HDD) solutions in handheld devices.  more

NXP Semiconductor Launches Chipset for Low-Cost Multimedia Phones

NXP Semiconductors (formerly part of Philips) says that it has launched a GSM/GPRS-optimized multimedia solution for the Ultra Low-Cost (ULC) segment of the mobile handset market. The PNX4903 delivers a complete system-level operation in a single monolithic IC. The ULC+ multimedia solution enables a music phone with color screen, MP3 playback, removable flash memory card and FM Tuner for a total bill of materials under USD$20. more
