'Sleep talking' PCs save energy and money

Personal computers may soon save large amounts of energy by "sleep talking." Computer scientists at UC San Diego and Microsoft Research have created a plug-and-play hardware prototype for personal computers that induces a new energy saving state known as "sleep talking." Normally PCs can be in either awake mode - where they consume power even if they are not being used, or in a low power sleep mode - where they save substantial power but are essentially inactive and unresponsive to network traffic. The new sleep talking state provides much of the energy savings of sleep mode and some of the network-and-Internet-connected convenience of awake mode.  more

Could a Transparent Mobile Phone be Possible?

A group of scientists at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has fabricated a working computer chip that is almost completely clear -- the first of its kind. The new technology, called transparent resistive random access memory (TRRAM), is described in this week's issue of the journal Applied Physics Letters, which is published by the American Institute of Physics.  more

Consumer Weakness Drives Negative Outlook for Semiconductors in 2009

Debt ratings agency, Fitch says that its 2009 Rating Outlook for the semiconductor industry is negative due to a meaningfully weaker macroeconomic environment, resulting in lower revenues for all semiconductor markets and, in particular, PCs and mobile handsets, which represent nearly 60% of global semiconductor consumption. While the overall market will be lower, Fitch expects developing economies will experience lower albeit still positive unit growth.  more

A Forgettable Year for Memory Chip Makers

For memory chip makers, 2008 will go down as a year to forget, as a major downturn in this segment caused revenue to fall for nearly all suppliers and contributed to negative results for the overall semiconductor industry, according to preliminary market-share figures from iSuppli.  more
