Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue Increased 3 Percent in 2007

Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $270.3 billion in 2007, a 2.9 percent increase from 2006, according to preliminary results from Gartner. Vendor performances were mixed with two vendors in the top 10 that experienced double-digit growth and two vendors that showed declines in revenue.  more

MP3 player segment still second largest in CE market

With the increase in mobile phones with built-in music players, it is interesting to see that according to a GfK study, MP3/4 Players remain the second largest product group within the UK Consumer Electronics (CE) market, despite an 8% decline in value (Y/E September 2007) to £657 million. 8.5 million MP3/4 players were sold in the Y/E September 2007 - a 6% increase on the previous year.  more

Flash Memory Will Still Dominate Mobile Phone Storage in 2012

HDD solutions will have a small but notable market opportunity in handheld devices over the next few years, but Flash memory will continue its dominance in mobile phones, according to a new Parks Associates report. The report finds 99% of mobile phones will have a Flash memory solution through 2007, dipping to 96% by the end of 2012. This slight shift is due to a small but emerging market for hard disk drive (HDD) solutions in handheld devices.  more

Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Up Sharply in August

Sales of NAND flash memory devices led the growth as supplies tightened and prices firmed. NAND flash sales were up by 48 percent compared to August 2006 and up by 19 percent from July of this year.  more

July Semiconductor Sales Grew by 2.2 Percent From 2006

Worldwide sales of semiconductors increased in July, growing to US$20.6 billion, an increase of 2.2 percent over July 2006 and an increase of 3.2 percent from June of this year, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported today. In July 2006 global microchip sales were $20.1 billion, and in June 2007 total sales amounted to $20 billion. Growth was mainly attributable to increases in sales of microprocessors, MOS logic devices, and NAND flash memory products. more

NXP Semiconductors (formerly part of Philips) says that it has launched a GSM/GPRS-optimized multimedia solution for the Ultra Low-Cost (ULC) segment of the mobile handset market. The PNX4903 delivers a complete system-level operation in a single monolithic IC. The ULC+ multimedia solution enables a music phone with color screen, MP3 playback, removable flash memory card and FM Tuner for a total bill of materials under USD$20. more

SanDisk Shipping Samples of 8GB Memory Cards for Mobile Phones

SanDisk says that it has started shipping 8GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) flash memory cards to phone manufacturers and mobile network operators (MNOs) for testing and evaluation purposes. The SanDisk M2 cards are primarily used in Sony Ericsson mobile phones. more

Qualcomm, a US-based fabless semiconductor supplier, rose to the ninth position among global semiconductor suppliers in the second quarter, up from 13th in the first quarter. The seller of communications chips in the second quarter achieved revenue $1.4 billion, up 8.6 percent from $1.3 billion in the first quarter. more
