Consumers Adopting Dual Mode Phones for Fixed Mobile Convergence While Enterprises Lag Behind

Led by consumer demand, fixed mobile convergence (FMC) is taking off around the world, even as businesses watch from the sidelines, says a new study from Insight Research. According to the new market research report, over the next five years FMC will generate more than $35 billion in revenue for service providers and hardware vendors. FMC service allows the same handset to access telecommunications services through both fixed and cellular networks. The handset, which can toggle between fixed and mobile calling, can also leverage WiFi hotspots, voice over IP (VoIP) technology, and voice over wireless local area networks (WLANs).  more

Fixed Mobile Faces Problems Without Increased Vendor Co-Operation

Nokia Sells Softwitch to French Operator

Nokia and SFR have signed a contract for the turnkey supply of the Nokia MSC Server (MSS) mobile softswitch to enhance the French operator's network coverage and capacity. The network modernization deal upgrades SFR's current circuit switched core network with a Nokia solution that fully enables fixed mobile convergence and the rapid growth of 3G-traffic. more

GSM Contract Expansion for The Bahamas

Nortel has been awarded a GSM expansion contract in the Bahamas from the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). The contract will also allow the operator to triple the capacity of its wireless network, extending service from Abaco and Bimini to include all the Bahamas' family islands by the end of September 2006. more

Landline Operators Driving Fixed-Mobile Convergence

Fixed telecoms operators will be the driving force behind fixed mobile convergence over the next five years, according to a report from Informa Telecoms & Media. The study predicts 92 million subscribers by 2011 generating US$28 billion in revenues and comprising 3% of overall subscriptions. Ovum Consulting says that it is intensifying its reach in the ICT sector in Central and Eastern Europe. Israeli Operator Orders Fixed/Mobile Platform

Israel's iDEN operator, MiRS has ordered a core convergence switching solution from Tekelec. The solution enables MiRS' transition to the Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture and enables next-generation capabilities, including fixed mobile convergence (FMC) and hosted session initiation protocol (SIP) services. Tekelec's IMS architecture drives switching for both MiRS' entire mobile device line and SIP-based clients, and it supports the execution of common network applications. more
