366,000 Picocells to be Deployed by 2013
Picocells - the "big brothers" of the increasingly familiar femtocells - have not enjoyed rapid or massive adoption so far. However ABI Research estimates that in 2013, there will have been cumulative deployments of about 366,000 picocell devices worldwide. While not a huge number in itself, that represents a 38% compound annual growth rate over the years from 2008. more

Femto Forum Outlines Case for LTE Femtocells
The femtocell trade body, the Femto Forum today outlined the case for LTE femtocells at the LTE World Summit in Berlin. The principal performance benefit that femtocells bring to LTE, cited by the Femto Forum, is that they will ensure more users receive peak data rates more of the time, especially inside buildings where the vast majority of mobile broadband data is consumed and where the service quality is lower than outside. femtocells achieve this by maximising spectrum re-use and by ensuring power, and therefore network capacity, is not wasted by trying to penetrate buildings. more

Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells
Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network. more
