Swiss Regulator Provisionally Extends GSM Licenses
Switzerland's Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has provisionally extended the GSM mobile telephony licences of Orange, Sunrise and Swisscom, which expire at the end of May 2008, until 31 December 2013 at the latest. This is intended to bridge the delays in the renewal of the three expiring GSM licences which have arisen as a result of appeals procedures. more

Fitch Ratings says that it expects the recent 700 MHz auction will have only modest credit implications for wireless operators. Verizon Communications and AT&T have significant capacity and financial flexibility to absorb the approximately $18.5 billion of 700 MHz spectrum purchased by the two companies. Other well-capitalized, smaller operators, with strong balance sheets and good free cash flow prospects, should be in a good position to fund future build-outs. more

Consumer Demand for Entertainment and Data Services Will Drive Smartphone Sales
Navigation, email and Internet access top the list of features that consumers look for when purchasing new wireless phones, according to a new consumer research study released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The study found that 40 percent of American adults plan to purchase a new wireless handset within the year. Although only 11 percent of adult cell phone owners say they own a smartphone, the number is likely to grow in the near future as consumer awareness of and demand for wireless services including music, video and Internet access steadily increase. more
