European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

Telekom Austria Slips into the Red on Restructuring Costs

Telekom Austria Group has reported full year revenues up 5.1% to €5.17 billion (US$6.6 billion), although EBITDA decreased by 30.2% to €1.3 billion (US$1.66 billion) due to restructuring costs in its landline division which cost it €632 million (US$806 million). Excluding the restructuring program EBITDA increased by 3.9% to €1.93 billion (US$2.46 billion).  more

EU Voice Call Roaming Price Caps Come into Effect Next Week

At the end of this month, it will become cheaper to make or receive calls while travelling in the European Union (EU) as new regulatory price caps come into effect. These price reductions are the result of the EU Roaming Regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2006 to curb the roaming charges consumers had to pay for roaming calls (on average €1.15 per minute at the time).  more

European Mobile Broadband Services Jeopardised By Regulation

EuropeÃ's mobile industry is cutting back spending on new networks and services as a growing regulatory burden from the European Union puts profitability under pressure - claims the GSM Association. To justify the imposition of retail price caps, the European Commission has claimed that mobile operators are making excessive profits, but the European mobile industryÃ's return on capital employed (ROCE) was just 9% in 2006 compared with more than 20% in software, pharmaceuticals and several other sectors, according to management consultancy A.T. Kearney.  more
