European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

Qualcomm Supports 3GPP's Modem Specification to Enhance Road Safety

EU Moves Closer to Approving 3G at 900Mhz

Study into mobile phone health risks for adolescents

Professor Malcolm Sim, a researcher at Australia's Monash University has joined a major new international study into mobile phone use and brain cancer risk in young people. Professor Sim, based at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, said the study would assess any potential brain cancer risks associated with the use of mobile phones by children and teenagers.  more

Telekom Austria Slips into the Red on Restructuring Costs

Telekom Austria Group has reported full year revenues up 5.1% to €5.17 billion (US$6.6 billion), although EBITDA decreased by 30.2% to €1.3 billion (US$1.66 billion) due to restructuring costs in its landline division which cost it €632 million (US$806 million). Excluding the restructuring program EBITDA increased by 3.9% to €1.93 billion (US$2.46 billion).  more

Czech Republic Tries to Stop Media Talking about Phone Tapping

Journalist lobbying organisation, Reporters Without Borders has condemned a proposed criminal law amendment before the Czech republic parliament that would ban the news media from publishing any information about the tapping of phones by the police. The proposed amendment provides for sentences of one to five years in prison and fines up to 5 million crowns (€182,000) for violators.  more

EU Investigating Mobile Operators Over Blocking of VoIP Services

The European Union is looking at whether blocks on VoIP service by Europe's mobile phone operators might breach competition laws. EU Voice Call Roaming Price Caps Come into Effect Next Week

At the end of this month, it will become cheaper to make or receive calls while travelling in the European Union (EU) as new regulatory price caps come into effect. These price reductions are the result of the EU Roaming Regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2006 to curb the roaming charges consumers had to pay for roaming calls (on average รขโ€šฌ1.15 per minute at the time).  more
