Russia's MTS Gets European Investment Bank Loan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has announced that it is raising a total of €218 million for Russia's MTS mobile operator, including €103 million to be committed by commercial banks. The loan will support MTS expansion and the pilot deployment of new technologies that reduce energy consumption of base stations, incorporate renewable energy sources, and reduce the carbon footprint of telecommunications.  more

EBRD provides Russia's MTS $250 million in long-term funds

European loan for GSM expansion in Kazakhstan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has decided to lend a total of US$100 million to the Kazakhstan based GSM operator, KaR-Tel. The loan is made up of US$100 million to finance new capital investments in KaR-Tel's network and refinance short-term debts. A further US$130 million of ECA backed vendor provided or arranged financing and internally generated cash, which will finance further new capital investments, refinance other indebtedness and support other operations of K-Mobile. more

Romanian network secures funding

Telesystem International Wireless (TIW) and ClearWave have jointly said that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ("EBRD") has been mandated by their Romanian subsidiary MobiFon to act as the lead arranger of a US$300 million senior loan facility. The proposed 6 year senior loan financing consists of an EBRD loan of up to US$230 million, including an EBRD A-Loan of up to US$120 million and an EBRD B-Loan of up to US$110 million jointly arranged and underwritten by ABN AMRO Bank and Bank Austria Creditanstalt. Two parallel loans of US$35 million each from Export Development Canada and Nordic Investment Bank are also expected to be part of the financing. more

Russian carrier raises network expansion funding

Moscow's third GSM network, Sonic Duo has secured US$200 million of financing to fund its network expansion. The debt has been raised from a consortium made up of the Nordic bank, Nordea, HypoVereinsbank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The transaction is the first major international financing in the sector by a bank. It is also the first major international financing of a Russian telecom project since the financial crisis in 1998. The investment will support the construction of Sonic Duo's GSM 900/1800 network, operating under the brand MegaFon. more
