­The worldwide mobile phone market grew 19.8% year over year in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) fueled by high smartphone growth, especially in emerging markets, and gains made by market challengers. Android Explodes in Western Europe - Becomes the Biggest Smartphone OS in 4Q10

The Western european mobile phone market grew 3.2% year-on-year to 58.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker. ­Shipments of smartphones increased to 25.6 million units, 99.4% higher than in 4Q09, to represent 44% of total shipments. Feature phone shipments declined to 33.1 million units 24.8% down compared with the previous year.  more

Mobile Phone Market Grows 17.9% in Fourth Quarter

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 17.9% in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10), a new quarterly high driven by smartphones. ­According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 401.4 million units in 4Q10 compared to 340.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2009. Vendors shipped a total of 1.39 billion units on a cumulative worldwide basis in 2010, up 18.5% from the 1.17 billion units shipped in 2009.The strong quarterly and annual growth comes after a weak 2009, which saw the market decline by 1.6%. A stronger economy and a wider array of increasingly affordable smartphones helped lift the market to its highest annual growth rate since 2006 when it grew 22.6%.  more

European mobile ad network fill rates perform significantly better than those in the USA

The Smaato Metrics for June show further significant increases by Android in global click through rates (CTR) for mobile adverts, while leaders Symbian and Feature Phones both suffer a dip in CTR Index. Smaato serves over 8 million ad requests in its network of more than 6,000 registered mobile publishers and over 40 mobile ad networks. more

Western European Mobile Phone Market Growth Dominated by Smartphones

The Western european mobile phone market grew 8.1% year on year to 42.7 million units in 1Q10, according to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker. Shipments of smartphones surged in the quarter to 12 million units, 57% higher than in last year's first quarter, to represent 28% of total shipments. Traditional mobile phones (TMPs) declined 4% year on year to 30.7 million units, showing the continuous trend toward smartphones.  more
