New EU Telecoms Regulator gets to work
Today marks the start of a new era for telecoms in the eu. The telecoms regulators of the 27 eu countries will meet for the first time in Brussels as members of the new Body of european Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). The new european telecoms regulator BEREC has been established following the adoption by the Council and Parliament of the new eu Telecoms rules in December 2009. With 12 fixed and 10 mobile telecoms companies offering services in many other eu Member States and hundreds of service providers operating across borders, BEREC is expected to play a crucial role in the single telecoms market and regulation across europe. more

European Commission Takes Legal Action Over German Mobile Termination Rates
The european Commission has opened an infringement procedure against Germany because the country's national regulator - the Bundesnetzagentur - did not consult the Commission and other national regulators prior to deciding on new levels of mobile termination rates. Contrary to Germany's obligations under eu telecoms rules, the Bundesnetzagentur's final decisions on mobile termination rates were adopted on 31 March 2009 before the Commission and other national regulators had the possibility to comment on the level of these rates. This lack of transparency is a first in the application of eu telecoms rules in the 27 eu Member States. more

European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges
The european Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another eu country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from euR0.46 to euR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from euR0.22 today to euR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad. more

Europe Votes to Reduce Roaming SMS and Mobile Data Costs
Yesterday evening the european Parliament, through a vote in its Industry Committee, gave strong support to the european Commission's proposals to reduce consumer roaming charges for sending text messages and downloading data in the eu. The Commission proposed in September 2008 to make sure that consumers in the eu do not have to pay more than €0.11 per roamed SMS in the eu (excluding VAT) - a proposal endorsed yesterday by the Parliament's lead Committee on the new roaming legislation. At present, SMS roaming charges in the eu are on average €0.28 per roamed SMS and can go up to over €0.80 in some countries. more
