LG Claims 2 Million Touchscreen Phone Sales
LG Electronics has announced that its touchscreen phone, the LG Cookie (LG-KP500) has recorded over two million unit sales worldwide in the five months since its debut last October. More than 1.2 million handsets have been sold in europe, and 600,000 Cookies have been sold in Asia and the emerging markets, including Latin America. In Korea, LG Cookie is currently the most popular handset with 100,000 units in accumulated sales as of March this year and record one-day sales of 4,500 units. more

Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western european mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more
