Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"

The acrimonious patent battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the european Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission.  more

Telefonica and Vodafone in Deal to Share European Networks

Telefonica and Vodafone have confirmed rumours and announced a 10-year european deal to share aspects of their radio networks and infrastructure in Germany, Spain, Ireland and the UK. As part of the collaboration, Telefónica and Vodafone are also exploring opportunities to cooperate in related areas such as the provision of transmission services.  more

India welcomes MVNOs

On Monday, the Indian government finally gave the go-ahead for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to enter the market. This follows a recommendation back in August 2008 from India's regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The government is expected to release detailed guidelines for MVNO entrants soon. We believe this approval will benefit both existing MNOs and new entrants.  more

Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western european converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western european mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Viviane Reding Welcomes French Plans to Lower Mobile Termination Rates

The european Commission, in a letter, has welcomed the French regulator's proposal to lower the wholesale rates charged by French mobile operators. The Commission also invited the regulator, ARCEP to keep up its efforts to set a target date by which they should equal the costs of an efficient operator in the next regulatory window that starts in 2011.  more
