Electricity Meters to Transmit Usage Data over T-Mobile Network
Echelon Corp. and T-Mobile USA have announced an alliance to accelerate the adoption of the smart grid in the North American market by reducing the communications cost of smart meters through the deployment of Echelon's Networked Energy Services (NES) system over T-Mobile's GSM network. As part of the agreement, Echelon will utilize an embedded T-Mobile SIM within a cellular radio module to enable all the Echelon smart meters on a given low voltage transformer to communicate back to the utility over the smart grid, and T-Mobile will offer users of Echelon's NES system and pricing plans for data usage. more

MTS and Sicap Team up to Offer Dynamic SIM Services in Belarus
Mobile network operator, MTS Belarus is to launch a SIM upgrade which will continuously display a PrePay customer's balance on their mobile phone display. The service is being provided by Sicap. Real time information is enabled by connecting a Sicap over the air SIM applet to the MTS call billing server. As such, each call is immediately debited from the account balance and the updated remaining credit displayed. more

Europe Votes to Reduce Roaming SMS and Mobile Data Costs
Yesterday evening the european Parliament, through a vote in its Industry Committee, gave strong support to the european Commission's proposals to reduce consumer roaming charges for sending text messages and downloading data in the eu. The Commission proposed in September 2008 to make sure that consumers in the eu do not have to pay more than €0.11 per roamed SMS in the eu (excluding VAT) - a proposal endorsed yesterday by the Parliament's lead Committee on the new roaming legislation. At present, SMS roaming charges in the eu are on average €0.28 per roamed SMS and can go up to over €0.80 in some countries. more
