MTS and Sicap Team up to Offer Dynamic SIM Services in Belarus
Mobile network operator, MTS Belarus is to launch a SIM upgrade which will continuously display a PrePay customer's balance on their mobile phone display. The service is being provided by Sicap. Real time information is enabled by connecting a Sicap over the air SIM applet to the MTS call billing server. As such, each call is immediately debited from the account balance and the updated remaining credit displayed. more

IDC Predicts Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments To Fall 8.3% in 2009
The worldwide mobile phone market felt the full effects of the economic crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008 as shipments fell 11.6% year over year, marking the first time the holiday quarter has not recorded double digit growth in seven years. This closed out a year that was dismal at best, yet overall 2008 managed to grow 4.3% over 2007. This has set the stage for what IDC predicts to be a very rough 2009, with the most recent market forecast anticipating growth of -8.3% for the year. more

Russians Ask Interpol to Find Former Mobile Phone Retailer
Russian prosecutors have sent a notice to Interpol seeking the arrest and extradition of Yevgeny Chichvarkin, 34 the former co-owner of Russian mobile phone retailer, euroset. Mr Chichvarkin is understood to be in the UK at the moment, after leaving Russia in January, following allegations of kidnapping and phone smuggling. more

Deutsche Telekom Surprises with a Fourth-Quarter Loss
Deutsche Telekom has reported a surprise fourth-quarter loss on an impairment charge and shaken up its management team to focus on regions as opposed to industry segments. The company reported a loss of €730 million (US$920 million), compared to a loss of €750 million a year ago. The loss was blamed on a write down of the value of Greece's Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE). more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession
Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western european mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's european Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07.
