Mobile TV License Granted in the United Arab Emirates

­The UAE's telecoms regulator, the TRA has awarded a Mobile TV license to a consortium that includes both mobile networks, for a payment of AED 17 million (US$4.6 million). The license is for ten years, with a five-year exclusivity period.  more

Etisalat Completes Pakistan Investment Deal

The United Arab Emirates based, etisalat- has announced the completion of discussions to buy a 26% stake in Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL). All pending issues have been agreed upon, including the conditions for payment of the bid amount of US$2.6 billion. This will be paid through etisalat International Pakistan (EIP) - in which etisalat owns 90% and Dubai Islamic Bank, 10%. more

3G network launched in the Middle East

The UAE's etisalat launched its 3G network last week, using kit supplied by China's Huawei Technologies. On the ceremony, His Excellency the Minister of Communication of UAE, Mr. Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, became the first user of the network, when he conducted a video telephony call in Dubai with etisalat's President & CEO Mr. Ali Salem Al Owais in Abu Dhabi, using a third generation mobile phone. more
