Etisalat Interested in Investments in Syria and Lebanon
UAE based Emirates Telecommunication Co. (etisalat) is seeking opportunities in Syria and Lebanon as licenses and privatisations are launched. The company is expecting to be able to bid for the third mobile license in Syria later this year, and will be interested in the privatisation of Lebanon's two mobile networks, if and when that eventually occurs. more

Nigeria - Total Market Grows to 63m as Penetration Hits 45%
The Nigerian mobile market's bullish growth showed no signs of abating in Q4 08. Quarterly net additions of 7.15m took the total number of customers over 60m, with a year-end figure of 62.99m, while the annual gain stood at 22.59m. By comparison, Q4 07 saw an increase of 3.39m and the 2007 boost was 11.92m. Meanwhile, the latest figures from Nigerian regulator the NCC show that at the end of January the total had risen to 64.16m. more

Motorola Wins Saudi Network Expansion Contract
Motorola says that it has won a contract worth approximately SA435 million (US$116 million) with Saudi Arabia's Etihad etisalat (Mobily) to improve GSM coverage in the Northwest and Southwest regions of the Kingdom. The contract marks the fifth major turnkey GSM network expansion that Mobily has undertaken with Motorola in the past four years. more

Indonesia's XL Cancels Towers Sale
Indonesian operator, PT Excelcomindo Pratama (XL) has cancelled plans to sell its portfolio of 7,000 towers and will use tap its shareholders in a rights issue to raise funds for its network expansion. The company said in a filing with the local stock exchange that the interested bidders were not willing to pay an acceptable price for the towers. more
