Ethiopia's monopoly mobile network, the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) has launched a GPRS service on its GSM network, reports the local newspaper, Nazret. Access to GPRS is limited to postpaid mobile subscribers for the time being. The corporation envisages providing similar service to prepaid mobile subscribers in the future. more

Ethiopian carrier buys optical backbone
The state-owned carrier Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) has commissioned Siemens to supply fiber optic technology on the basis of its optical platform Surpass hiT 70xx. The order is worth around US$15.4 million. Siemens will implement an optical backbone for ETC's fixed and mobile network in the north and center of the country with a total length of approximately 1700 kilometers and a transmission rate of 2.5 GB/s. more

Ethiopia gets substantial GSM coverage expansion
China's Zhongxing Telecom Corporation (ZTE) has signed a GSM expansion contract with Ethiopia's sole GSM network, operated by the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC). The total contract will expand the network capacity by 200,000 lines. Under the contract, the first phase will bring some additional 45,000 subscriber capacity to the already highly congested Addis Ababa network, which will be a temporary cure for the backlog of 85,000 waiting subscribers. more
