On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry structure for communications equipment.  more

High speed CDMA network launching in Taiwan

Nortel Networks says that it has built a CDMA2000 1XEV-DO network for Taiwan's Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless (APBW). Beginning in the third quarter of 2003, APBW is scheduled to begin providing wireless voice and data services island-wide. Data services will be offered at rates up to 153Kbps using CDMA2000 1X technology. APBW will also offer higher-speed data services in the Taipei metropolitan area - with a peak rate of 2.4Mbps - using CDMA2000 1XEV-DO. more

Nortel demos IP based 3G backbone network transmission

Nortel Networks has demonstrated the world's first UMTS calls using an IP-based UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). IP-based UTRAN capabilities can give operators more flexibility in routing wireless traffic, create Wireless Data Network efficiencies that drive down the cost of delivering traffic, and simplify provisioning and management of UTMS radio equipment - particularly in areas of high demand. Traditional wireless networks and previous UMTS demonstrations have used ATM as the terrestrial transport protocol. more
