Sprint Nextel Facing $1.2 Billion Lawsuit

Sprint Nextel is facing a class-action lawsuit over its early termination fees, which potentially could cost the company as much as US$1.2 billion. Earlier this year, the company lost a US$73 million lawsuit over the early termination fees, but the new lawsuit is seeking to upgrade that to a class-action and hence act on behalf of all the company's customers.  more

Verizon ETF Strategy Is Low Risk with High Rewards - report

Yankee Group says that Verizon Wireless' recent announcement to amend its early-termination fees (etfs) is a low-risk but high-reward move for the carrier that will challenge other carriers to launch similar initiatives for the fourth quarter shopping rush. Verizon Wireless Amending Early Termination Fee

Verizon Wireless says that it is to amend the termination charges it levies on customers who wish to cancel their contract account early. Starting from the Autumn, customers will no longer pay a fixed fee, but will have their termination fee graded depending on how many months their contract has left to run. Verizon Wireless is the first major U.S. carrier to commit to a national policy to pro-rate the early termination fee (etf). The company will include new terms in customer contracts that will progressively reduce the amount a customer has to pay if they terminate their contract with Verizon Wireless before their committed term expires. more

Cingular investigated by consumer watchdog

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has begun an investigation into the USA cellphone network, Cingular, to determine whether it violated California's consumer laws. The action is based in part on customer complaints that Cingular's system has inadequate coverage in customers' area of use, and insufficient system capacity to carry their calls as needed, contrary to the customers' reasonable expectations. The PUC says that it has received over 4,700 complaints about Cingular (and including before the company was created from its merger) in the past 3 years. more
