Vodafone Raises Debt for Indian Expansion

India's Aircel Reported to be in Talks to Buy Loop Mobile

India's Aircel Cellular is reported to be in talks to buy Mumbai based Loop Mobile (formerly BPL Mobile), which is owned by the Ruias of the essar group. Vodafone Raising Funds for India's 3G Auction

Vodafone essar is reported to be currently trying to raise US$2 billion as a bridging loan to finance its bids in the country's delayed 3G and WiMAX auctions. The current reserve price for the 3G auction is US$412 million to cover all the available circles - although the auction has been delayed as the Finance Ministry is battling to double the reserve to at least US$824 million.  more

Vodafone Seeking Damages From Indian Partner

India's Vodafone essar is seeking damages of around Rs 1,100 crore (US$252 million) from the essar Group for not transferring shares in Mumbai based BPL Mobile to the company. As part of Vodafone's move into the Indian market, the company agreed to buy BPL Mobile from the Ruias of the essar Group and merge it with Vodafone essar.  more

Police Recover Over 130 BlackBerry's from Criminal Gang

Indian Government Close to Releasing Withheld 2G Spectrum

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has given an in principle clearance for Idea Cellular, Vodafone essar and Aircel to be granted the outstanding 2G spectrum where they currently hold licences, a DoT source told The Economic Times. Currently the operators all hold licenses in some circles, but have not been able to launch their services until the spectrum was released to them.  more

Vodafone Planning Huge Indian Network Expansion

The newspaper reports that according to sources, Nokia Siemens Networks is likely to be the principal supplier of network electronics such as base tower stations (BTS), base station controllers (BSC) and transcoders in 12 out of Vodafone essar's 16 existing circles. Motorola, in turn is slated to supply BTSs, BSCs and transcoders in the company's Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Punjab circles. As for mobile switching centres (MSC), Nokia Siemens will supply to almost all existing Vodafone essar circles, with the exception of Mumbai metro circle where the MSCs will be supplied by Ericsson. more
