Private Equity Group Invests in Indian Mobile Operator
The private equity group, Providence Equity Partners has taken a twenty percent stake in Aditya Birla Telecom (ABTL) - a wholly-owned subsidiary of India's Idea Cellular - for US$640 million. ABTL owns the telecom mobile license for the Bihar service area and will hold a 16 per cent stake in Indus Towers, the company's tower subsidiary which is co-owned by Vodafone essar and Bharti Airtel. more

Indian Operator Planning $250 Million Network Expansion Spend
India's Idea Cellular says that it plans to spend Rs 1000 crore (US$250 million) expanding its network in the western state of Gujarat. Idea, part of Aditya Birla Group, operates in 11 of India's 23 telecom circles. more

Indian Government Close to Releasing Withheld 2G Spectrum
India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has given an in principle clearance for Idea Cellular, Vodafone essar and Aircel to be granted the outstanding 2G spectrum where they currently hold licences, a DoT source told The Economic Times. Currently the operators all hold licenses in some circles, but have not been able to launch their services until the spectrum was released to them. more
