Ericsson Rumoured to have Won $2 Billion Deal from Sprint Nextel
ericsson is reported to have won a huge US$2 billion service contract from US operator, Sprint Nextel. Citing sources, the business news magazine, Affarsvarlden said the contract is said to be a surprise considering that ericsson no long supports the CDMA technology used by Sprint Nextel. The complex integration with the Motorola supplied iDEN network can only add to the headaches, although any deal could lead to speculation that Motorola might try to offload their entire iDEN platform to ericsson. more

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010
Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010. more

Managed Services for Network Equipment OEMs to Reach $6.4 Billion in 2009
Managed services for mobile networks returned about $19 billion revenue in 2008, ($5.8 billion for network services and $13.4 billion for IT-related services.) Europe led managed services adoption: Tier One operators there face stiff competition, so they have turned to managed services to improve their margins. According to a new study from ABI Research, that $19 billion figure represents only a small part of the potential addressable market. more

Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.
