New President and CEO for ST-Ericsson

­ST-ericsson, a joint venture of STMicroelectronics and ericsson has announced the appointment of Gilles Delfassy as President and CEO of the company. Alain Dutheil, who led the company during the merger, will work with Delfassy over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition. Delfassy will assume his position as President and CEO effective November 2, 2009. After then, Dutheil will continue to support ST-ericsson by joining its Board and will return to his previous role as STMicroelectronics' Chief Operating Officer.  more

Nokia Deal to Boost Qualcomm's Dominance in Mobile Handset Baseband Chips?

Due to its recent agreement with Nokia, Qualcomm is likely to solidify its lead in the global market for mobile-handset baseband semiconductors, according to iSuppli Corp. Based on iSuppli's preliminary estimate, Qualcomm in the fourth quarter accounted for 40.6 percent of worldwide revenue from shipments of mobile handset baseband semiconductors, up from 36.3 percent in the third quarter.  more

Taiwanese OEMs Switching from Ericsson to Qualcomm for 3G Phones

Taiwan's handset manufacturers are increasingly switching from the ericsson mobile phone platform to Qualcomm's own handset platform - report local industry sources. Sources told DigiTimes that because HTC has had good success with its Qualcomm-based 3G handsets, other major handset vendors such as Motorola, LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Palm all intend to adopt the Qualcomm platform for their 3G products.  more
