Orange and Vodafone Outsource their UK Network Management

Two of the UK's mobile networks have separately - but on the same day - announced network maintenance outsourcing deals. Orange UK has given a 5-year contract to Nokia Siemens Networks, while Vodafone UK granted a 7-year contract to ericsson.  more

Orange Deploying 100 Solar Powered Base Stations in African Nation

Orange Guinea Conakry and ericsson are deploying over 100 base stations fully powered by solar energy, connecting remote parts of rural Africa. Using ericsson's energy-efficient base stations, a hybrid diesel-battery solution and solar panels, Orange is increasing mobile coverage in rural and urban areas.  more

Managed Services for Network Equipment OEMs to Reach $6.4 Billion in 2009

Managed services for mobile networks returned about $19 billion revenue in 2008, ($5.8 billion for network services and $13.4 billion for IT-related services.) Europe led managed services adoption: Tier One operators there face stiff competition, so they have turned to managed services to improve their margins. According to a new study from ABI Research, that $19 billion figure represents only a small part of the potential addressable market.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more

Sony Ericsson Shows Off New Walkman Phone

Sony ericsson has shown off another Walkman branded mobile phone, and a Wireless Home Audio System. The W705 features the same sound quality as the W980 Walkman phone which was rated "best audio experience" in a trial conducted in Germany by TESTfactory. The W705 includes standard Walkman features such as the music recognition application TrackID, SensMe, for matching your mood to the music and Shake control to change tracks with the flick of your hand.  more

FMC phones hit $7.6B in 2Q08; FMC network elements on target to grow 82% in 2008

Market research firm Infonetics Research reports that sales of dual mode cellular/WiFi phones, including dual service and UMA and IMS seamless FMC client phones, hit US $7.6 billion in 2Q08 and are expected to be up 16% for the year, indicating healthy growth for converged cellular/WiFi services in both enterprise and consumer market segments.  more
