LTE is changing the landscape of IPR wealth

The emergence of LTE is causing a major reshuffle in the distribution of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) wealth, according to new research from Informa Telecoms & Media. Ericsson Buys Nortel's Korean Joint Venture with LG Electronics

ericsson has agreed to buy Nortel's majority shareholding (50%+1 share) in LG-Nortel, the joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel Networks for an undisclosed amount in shares. This acquisition will significantly expand ericsson's footprint in the Korean market and provide ericsson with a well established sales channel and strong R&D capability in the country. more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter

The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession. more

Financial Sites Popular Among Older European Mobile Web Users

comScore has reported that financial services sites, such as those offering banking and stock trading services, are the most popular among European mobile subscribers older than 55, while teenagers are more likely to visit social networking, entertainment and even comic sites on their mobile devices. more

Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

Voice over LTE Initiative Launched

A group of leaders in the wireless industry comprised of Alcatel-Lucent, ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE have announced a joint effort, referred to as the Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA) Forum. The joint effort aims to define a set of specifications within the forum for enabling delivery of voice services over LTE access networks based on the current 3GPP Generic Access Network (GAN) standard. more

Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Manufacturers continued to struggle against low consumer confidence in both emerging and mature markets. more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more
