Sony Ericsson to Cut a Further 2,000 Jobs

Sony ericsson has announced its first quarter results, and reported a 35% slump in handset sales to 14.5 million units, although that is in line with guidance offered earlier this month. Sales for the quarter were EUR 1.74 billion (US$2.3 billion), a decrease of 36% from a year ago.  more

Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more

Austria Gets Europe's First HSPA+ Mobile Data Network

Telekom Austria's mobile subsidiary, mobilkom austria, has become the first operator in Europe to launch HSPA+ services - offering a potential mobile data download speed of 21 Mbps.
