Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers

Qualcomm says that Japan's mobile operators have exceeded 100 million 3G CDMA subscribers as of April 2009, citing data announced by the Telecommunications Carriers Association in Japan.  more

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base

SoftbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, SoftbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m.  more

W-CDMA Close to Becoming Japan's Dominant Mobile Tech

After leading the net additions race in Japan in May, Softbank Mobile has pulled even further in front in June, claiming very nearly half of all the net new connections made in the month. Of the 415k new customers, Softbank accounted for 206k, whilst the larger DoCoMo and KDDI registered just 209k between them. The result was a proportionate growth rate of 3.34% for Softbank Mobile in the second quarter, which was well above the overall uplift in the market of 1.32% over the three months. This gave Japan's smallest operator a welcome boost to its market share position of 0.32pp between March and June, taking its total to 16.77%. more

Huawei Wins Japanese 3G Contract

Huawei has announced that, emobile, an innovative mobile operator in Japan, has selected Huawei as a key 3G equipment supplier for the roll out of its new UMTS and HSDPA network. Under the Framework Agreement signed with emobile, Huawei will deploy Japan's first-ever all IP-based HSDPA radio access network initially starting in several larger metropolitan areas such as Sendai and Sapporo, and will support the roll out of emobile's nationwide UMTS/HSDPA network in the upcoming years. more

Ericsson Wins Japanese 3G Contract

emobile, a new entrant to the Japanese 3G market, has selected Ericsson as the prime supplier of its new WCDMA/HSDPA network. The agreement involves WCDMA 1.7GHz radio networks in the most populated areas of Japan, such as Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, and a complete nationwide core network, including Ericsson's service-aware packet core and mobile softswitch solution. Fast roll-out will enable emobile, a subsidiary company of eAccess, to launch commercial services in March 2007. more
