GSM subscriber base more than doubles in a year

GSM has the highest annual growth of any wireless technology in Latin America and the Caribbean reports 3G Americas - with a 121% increase in customers from June 2002 to June 2003 according to emc World Cellular Database. Five years ago, GSM was operating in only four countries in the region and has rapidly extended to 36 countries today, making it the fastest growing technology. GSM coverage envelops the Americas

3G Americas reports GSM's significant progress in the Americas with coverage expanding in nearly every country in the region and at a growth rate of more than 60% from March 2002 to March 2003. Based on figures from emc World Cellular Database, GSM represents the largest percentage of growth of any wireless technology in the Americas. This growth is significant not only due to the new deployments by GSM operators, but also the GSM overlays by existing TDMA and CDMA operators. Cellphones do not cause petrol station fires

US market passes 50% penetration with CDMA continuing to dominate

The US wireless market had grown to 141.4 million subscribers to the end of December 2002 passing the 50% penetration milestone, according to the latest figures from emc. Mike Woolfrey, Research Manager, emc added that "While the US has often been perceived as being behind other mature markets, it is the second largest domestic market in the world, only China has more cellular users".

With the market slowing, carriers are looking to target under-penetrated sectors of the market that in European markets has come from prepaid offerings. US carriers are conscious of the trade-off of increased market share against lower revenue gains from the prepaid sector which currently only accounts for less than 10% of all US users. European experience confirms lower revenue potential from prepaid users, but emc reiterates that there is still profit in prepaid. more

GSM has become the fastest growing wireless technology in the Americas, registering a 37% year-over-year growth through September 2002 according to the emc World Cellular Database. GSM subscribers globally totaled more than 745 million subscribers representing growth of 28% during the same twelve months. more

India tariffs some of the lowest in the world

A review of tariff statistics around the world by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has shown that cellular mobile telephony tariffs in India are the lowest in the world. Cellular mobile tariff statistics from emc show that India at US$16 per month has the lowest monthly cost of a 300-minute basket for cellular services. In contrast a 300-minute basket costs US$ 21 in China, US$29 in Thailand, US$ 40 in Malaysia and US$ 42 in Indonesia, The tariffs in South American economies are far higher at US$ 60 for Chile US$ 77 for Brazil, US$ 96 for Mexico and US$115 for Argentina. more

GSM and TDMA take the majority of customers in America

3G Americas, the wireless trade organization focused on the wireless industry in the Americas, announced figures using data provided by the emc World Cellular Database for the year end growth of GSM and TDMA in the Americas to more than 107 million subscribers, representing about 61% of all digital cellular subscribers. During the year ending December 31, 2001, GSM grew by 50.4% to nearly 17 million subscribers in North, Central, and South America. In that same period of time, TDMA added more subscribers than any other technology in the Americas with a year-end figure of over 90 million subscribers. The growth of GSM and TDMA combined represent 56% of the total digital cellular growth in the Americas during 2001. more
