Qualcomm Warns About Scarce 3G Spectrum in Asia Region

In an interview, Qualcomm's president for Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, John Stefanac warned that mobile operators face a regulatory regime which is not allocating sufficient radio spectrum for 3G services. Citing a recent example in Indonesia, he told the South China Morning Post that the networks were only granted 5-10Mhz of spectrum each, which is not sufficient to deploy viable 3G services.  more

Vodafone Starts Selling 3G PC Card for 900Mhz HSPA Networks

Option has started shipping a new wireless broadband ExpressCard to Vodafone - which also supports HSPA services at 900Mhz. Exclusively developed for the Vodafone Group and its Partner Networks, the new ExpressCard is designed to achieve peak HSDPA download speeds of 7.2 Mbps with HSUPA uploads at up to 5.76 Mbps - depending on the network availability.  more

UMTS900 to be Deployed this Year

Informa says that it believes that Finland, France and Portugal will lead the way in rolling out UMTS900, as predicted in a recent Informa report. From the beginning of this year, Europe's CEPT cleared the path for the roll-out of UMTS900 in its 47 member states. It has adopted a decision to allow deployment of UMTS in the spectrum bands formerly reserved for GSM. All that now remains is for the member states to implement the decision into their national radio-frequency plans, a process that has already begun in Finland and Portugal. more
