Forecast: Half a Billion GSM/UMTS Subscriptions in the Americas by Year End
Trade group, 3G Americas says that by the end of 2008, there will be more than half a billion mobile wireless subscriptions to the GSM technology family including edge and UMTS/HSPA in the Americas, according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media. Tremendous growth was posted in the year 2007, as the GSM family of technologies once again grew its market share as the number one mobile wireless technology in the Western Hemisphere, with a 64% regional share of market. more

GSA Survey reports 166 HSDPA networks launched in 75 countries
According to a new survey published today by GSA - the Global mobile Suppliers Association, 68 HSDPA networks commercially launched during 2007, representing annual growth of 69%. GSA's latest HSDPA Operator Commitments survey confirms there are 166 commercial HSDPA networks in 75 countries. HSDPA-enabled mobile broadband services extended to 24 new countries during the year. A further 38 networks are committed to HSDPA rollout, to reach a total of 204 HSDPA Operator commitments in 89 countries. more

GSM Market Share Grows to 62% in Western Hemisphere
3G Americas, an organization representing GSM technology in the Americas, has announced that the GSM technology family's market share in the Western Hemisphere -- North America, Central and South America, and the Caribbean -- has grown nine percentage points in the past twelve months, to 62%, up from 53% at the end of third quarter 2006. The GSM/edge/UMTS/HSPA deployment strategy is gaining global traction, with nearly 150 joint edge/UMTS networks commercially available. 3G Americas also reports almost 200 commercial UMTS networks, 150 of which are enhanced by HSDPA, and most UMTS operators are expected to upgrade network services with HSPA (HSDPA+HSUPA). more
