Nortel: The dilemmas of wireless broadband adoption

The primary concern is the cost of handsets, which according to Kevin Taylor, Nortel's VP for mobility and converged core networks, can amount to 70% of an operator's costs when launching a new service. That cost can easily translate into a prohibitively high cost of the service for the end consumer. more

HSPA Networks to Dominate Mobile Infrastructure Revenue

High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network deployments will garner over 60% of infrastructure revenue in 2012, according to a new report from Telecom Trend. The report says the infrastructure market will generate over $100 billion in revenue in 2012. "WCDMA is the fastest growing technology, giving WCDMA networks unprecedented economies of scale and helping lower equipment costs," said Naqi Jaffery, President and Chief Analyst, Telecom Trends International. HSPA, an enhancement to WCDMA, will increase both data rates and network capacity and by 2012, HSPA will become the de facto global standard, he said. more

Evolving EDGE data speeds

The Global mobile Suppliers Association has announced its support for the new 3GPP study items on EDGE Evolution. EDGE Evolution is envisaged to bring on average 2-3 fold data speeds compared to EDGE rates today, higher voice and data capacity and improved spectral efficiency. Many operators are deploying a combined WCDMA/EDGE network strategy for delivery of 3G services. EDGE Evolution is a natural complement to HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) which will enhance WCDMA data rates and capacity. more
