Motorola profits delight

Motorola has reported sales of US$8.6 billion in first-quarter 2004, representing a 42% increase on a year ago. Motorola also reported net profits of US$609 million. Motorola Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ed Zander said, "We also continued to strengthen our balance sheet - a key objective for Motorola for the past several years. We generated positive operating cash flow of $858 million in the first quarter, the thirteenth consecutive quarter of positive cash flow. Combined with cash proceeds from the sale of investments, this enabled Motorola to end the quarter with a net cash position of $902 million. This represents a major milestone for Motorola, as it is the first time in more than 35 years that we have ended a quarter in an overall net cash position. During the quarter, in addition to moving from a net debt position of $41 million to a net cash position of $902 million, we reduced gross debt by $544 million." more

New boss selected for Motorola

Motorola has elected the former boss of Sun, Edward J. Zander to succeed Christopher B. Galvin as chairman and chief executive officer of the company. Zander, 56, most recently was a managing director of Silver Lake Partners, a leading private equity fund focused on investments in technology industries. Zander will join Motorola in his new capacity effective 5 January 2004. more
