Econet Plans $300 Million Spend on Kenyan Network

India's Essar Group Invests in Kenyan Operator
Africa's Econet Wireless International (EWI) has sold a 49% stake in the company to India's Essar Communications Holdings (ECHL). The companies said that the move would significantly benefit Econet Wireless Kenya (EWK), which is 70% owned by EWI, from a rollout as well as product offering perspective. Essar says that it will actively participate with EWI in the network rollout of EWK. more

Anti-Fraud Software Deployed at Zimbabwe Network
Zimbabwe's Econet Wireless is deploying Subex Azure's Ranger (now known as Nikira) Fraud Management and Moneta Revenue Assurance products. The company wanted to ensure that it was maximizing its revenues by reducing telecoms fraud, in particular the practise of 'refilling' calls, whereby international calls are diverted before they reach Zimbabwe and are renumbered to appear as local calls. This practice was costing the company millions of dollars and causing congestion on international routes resulting in network degradation and poor quality of service. more

Telkom Kenya Awarded a Mobile Operator License
Kenya's telecoms regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has awarded a mobile operator license to Telkom Kenya, which has legalised its existing CDMA based fixed wireless network. The incumbent GSM operators had complained that Telkom Kenya's CDMA network was illegal as the company hadn't paid for an operating license that the regulator had considered to be a fixed wireless service. Since the launch though, Telkom Kenya has marketed the service as a mobile phone network in some areas. more

Penetration Over 100% in New Zealand, but Still no Sign of Econet
Penetration in New Zealand broke the 100% barrier during Q2 2007 to reach 100.9% at the end of June, with the total customer base standing at 4.15 million. There are relatively few other duopolies in the world which have succeeded in reaching 100%, some notable exceptions being Kuwait and Iceland. Of course, there is still room for expansion, with similarly developed countries recording 110% penetration and over. more

Kenya Awards 3rd GSM License - Again
Africa's Econet Wireless says that it has had it's GSM network license in Kenya has been returned to it by the regulator and is now planning to deploy its network early next year. The license was originally awarded in 2003 but revoked shortly afterwards by the then Kenyan Minister of Information and Communication Raphael Tuju who claimed that the company had not complied with shareholder requirements concerning local investor holdings. more

Econet Installs Fraud Tracking Software
Zimbabwe's Econet Wireless says that it has installed a software system to track down fraudsters, including those who have been costing the company millions of dollars in foreign currency by diverting international calls before they reach Zimbabwe and renumber them to appear as local calls. more

Econet Ready to Launch 3G Services
Zimbabwe's Econet Wireless says that it is now ready to offer 3G services but the company said its commercial launch has been delayed by the lack of the necessary frequencies that can only be allocated by the regulator.
