Sprint Nextel Proposes Settlement of ETF Lawsuit

US operator, Sprint Nextel has proposed a settlement of lawsuits relating to its Early Termination Fees (ETF) that were applied to customers who terminated their contracts before they had expired. Under the terms of the proposed settlement, Sprint Nextel has agreed to pay US$14 million into a Common Fund. Sprint Nextel will also provide up to US$3.5 million in Non-Cash Benefits.  more

T-Mobile Agrees to Settle Early Termination Fees Lawsuit

T-Mobile USA has proposed a settlement of a lawsuit against the company for charging early termination fees (ETF) to customers who close their account before their contract has expired. Under the terms of the agreement, which is still waiting for court approval, the company would make a payment of US$11.5 million to customers affected between July 1999 and Feb 2009.  more

Sprint Nextel Facing $1.2 Billion Lawsuit

Sprint Nextel is facing a class-action lawsuit over its early termination fees, which potentially could cost the company as much as US$1.2 billion. Earlier this year, the company lost a US$73 million lawsuit over the early termination fees, but the new lawsuit is seeking to upgrade that to a class-action and hence act on behalf of all the company's customers.  more

Cingular Settles Californian Lawsuit

Cingular Wireless has settled a legal action and will offer refunds worth US$18.5 million to Californian residents who had paid penalties for early termination of their phone contracts where network coverage was inadequate. more

Verizon Wireless Amending Early Termination Fee

Verizon Wireless says that it is to amend the termination charges it levies on customers who wish to cancel their contract account early. Starting from the Autumn, customers will no longer pay a fixed fee, but will have their termination fee graded depending on how many months their contract has left to run. Verizon Wireless is the first major U.S. carrier to commit to a national policy to pro-rate the early termination fee (ETF). The company will include new terms in customer contracts that will progressively reduce the amount a customer has to pay if they terminate their contract with Verizon Wireless before their committed term expires. more
