Australian Mobile Networks to Offer Location Information to Emergency Services

­Australian mobile networks will be required to provide mobile location information to the emergency services from the end of April, under new plans announced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The new rules only mandate situations where a "Triple Zero" caller is unable to verbally report their location, although it can be presumed that the service will be offered as routine due to the time saving it can offer the emergency services.  more

Locating Emergency Callers Improving in the USA

The National Emergency Number Association (NENA) has reported that ninety-five percent of Americans now reside in areas where wireless 911 service includes the delivery of the user's callback number and estimated caller location to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), a capability known as Phase II Wireless Enhanced 911 (e911) service. This number represents a five percent increase from a year ago in the percentage of the population living in counties with 911 centers capable of receiving Phase II Wireless e911 information.  more

Canadian Operators Told to Improve 911 Locations Based Services

Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe

According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost 572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the e911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is higher than in other regions.  more

Sagem to Embed GPS Receiver into SIM Cards

Smartcard vendor, Sagem Orga has announced a partnership with BlueSky Positioning to integrate A-GPS positioning technology on to conventional SIM cards. Sagem Orga and BlueSky Positioning's new approach incorporates a GPS receiver and a proprietary antenna into the SIM card, enabling mobile operators to deploy applications with no need for software or hardware changes.  more
