Over 75% of USA Covered By Phase II Wireless Enhanced 911

Over three-quarters of the USA's population now reside in areas where wireless 911 service includes delivery of the caller's call back number and location to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), a capability known as enhanced 911 (e911). This number represents an eight percent increase in Phase II deployments over statistics released by the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) in December of 2005. more

Rural networks ask for location aware delay

The USA's Rural Telecommunications Group (RTG) has filed a Petition with the telecoms regulator, the FCC requesting Temporary Limited Stay of Section 20.18 of the Commission's Rules, and asking that the commission create a Tier IV class of rural wireless carriers that will be eligible for additional time to meet the e911 Phase II accuracy requirements set forth in Section 20.18 of the FCC's rules. The Tier IV classification would apply to carriers with 100,000 or fewer subscribers. RTG has created categories or "baskets" of relief for Tier IV carriers that fit into specific, narrowly focused situations. The relief requested applies to Tier IV carriers who have chosen handset and network based solutions and varies according to the particular carrier's situation. more

Europe commissions study into location based emergency services

Helios Technology has been selected as management consultants to assist the European Commission in developing a Europe-wide implementation strategy for enhanced emergency service, otherwise known as E-112. This service aims to provide the location of a mobile phone direct to the local emergency service, enabling a faster response to the incident, and is similar to the e911 service being developed in the USA. more
