Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

3G Contract Awarded to Nokia-Siemens/Huawei in Thailand

Thailand's Total Access Communication has selected Nokia Siemens Networks and mainland's Huawei Technologies to supply gear for a 3G network, a company official has announced. 3G Network Launched in Bangkok

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) is reported to have launched its long planned 3G network - operating in the 900Mhz band - in the capital city, Bangkok. The firm is already operating a 3G network in the 900Mhz band in Chiang Mai, pending the award of 3G licenses and spectrum in the more conventional 2.1Ghz bands.  more

Qualcomm Says Thailand Needs at Least Three 3G Networks

Qualcomm Thailand country manager, Kaneungjit Suriyathumrongkul has warned that Thailand will need at least three 3G networks to ensure sufficient competition in the market. Ms Suriyathumrongkul also noted that MVNOs were an option for the country, but only if the underlying network is good and expressed concerns with the idea of a shared national network.  more

Thai Operator to Delay 3G Rollout

Thai operator, dtac has announced that it will delay the launch of its 3G network until it sees more demand for mobile data services. The decision was taken by the company's new CEO, Tore Johnsen, who took charge of dtac earlier this month.  more

Thailand Q3 2006 Market Update - Mobile World Briefing

The market share of Thailand's largest operator, AIS, fell below 50% by the end of Q3 2006 for the first time since December 1999. During the first quarter of 2000, the operator gained an overall majority from rivals Digital Phone, dtac, TOT and CAT, and subsequently kept this advantage for more than six and a half years. However, the continued resurgence of dtac, as well as impressive growth from its more recent competitor TrueMove (formerly TA Orange), saw the market leader lose more than 2pp of share in Q3 2006, to end the quarter with 48.5% of the market. dtac and TrueMove together accounted for 49.8% of the national customer base at the end of September, or 18.22m customers to AIS' 17.72m.

Thai networks solve argument

The Telephone Organisation of Thailand has said that it has resolved its argument with the local GSM network, dtac with dtac agreeing to pay both the disputed access fees and late payment fines. "dtac executives have agreed to abide by all the terms stipulated in the original concession contract," said Sutham Malila, the TOT president. more

More turmoil in Thai network

Thailand's dtac has taken steps to ensure its customers are not disconnected while it resolves an argument with the regulator, the Telephone Organisation of Thailand (TOT). dtac has lodged the cheque for US$25 million with the Administrative Court until a court hearing is held to determine if the fees are valid. more
