India's Reliance Seeks 100 Million Subscribers by Year-End
India's Reliance Communications has set itself a target of breaking the 100 million subscriber mark before the end of this year - requiring an additional 25 million new customers to sign up to its network. The firm reported a surge in subscriptions following the launch of its GSM network, which overlays its existing CDMA service. more

China, India, Pakistan, Japan and South Korea are amongst the largest markets in Asia and The Mobile World holds monthly data for all five. At the end of July, the five markets had a combined total of 1.122bn mobile customers, approximately 30% of the global total. Between them they added 140.6m new connections in the first seven months of 2008 alone, and 233.8m were added in the twelve months ending 31st July 2008. more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground
The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and docomo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market. more

Which Foreign Telcos will Invest in Vietnam
In September 2006, at a final meeting with local press before the opening of 2006 Vietnam Telecomp in HCM City, chief representative of France Telecom said frankly about the group's intention to buy stocks of several Vietnamese major telecommunications companies, particularly some mobile phone companies like MobiFone and VinaPhone. Pakistan - 10 Million New Customers in 2007
Almost 2.8m new mobile customers joined the ranks in Pakistan in the month of April - the second highest total ever recorded in the market, behind October 2006. Monthly proportionate growth stayed above 5% by a whisker, after 5.1% in March, taking the total customer base in the market to 58.4m and penetration to 34.7% from 33.0% a month earlier. A total of 10.0m new customers were added in the first four months of 2007, these being shared almost equally between the market's four largest operators. more

GSM Association Aims for Global Point of Sale Purchases by Mobile Phone
The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. The 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative is a natural progression for the industry, following the GSMA's program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling Near Field Communications (NFC), the technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. more
