DoCoMo Shows Off Concept Phone Made from Wood

Symbian reaches 30 million smartphone shipments in Japan

Symbian has announced that over 30 million phones based on Symbian OS have shipped in Japan up until the end of November 2007. Symbian's market share of the NTT docomo FOMA market grew in one year from 50% to 65% at the end of H1 2007. To date, a total of 69 mobile phone models based on Symbian OS have launched in Japan by six Symbian customers: Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Nokia, Motorola, Sharp and Sony Ericsson.  more

20.4m Symbian smartphones shipped in Q3 2007

Smartphone OS vendor, Symbian has announced that during Q3 of this year, the company shipped 20.4 million smartphone licenses, bringing its total to 165 million licenses since the company was formed. 15 new Symbian enabled smartphones models commenced shipment in Q3 2007, bringing the total number of models in the market at the end of Q3 2007 to 134 phones.  more

Over 10 Million Smartphones Shipped in Asia in Q1

The latest APAC smart mobile device market estimates from Canalys reveal the continuing rise of converged devices (smart phones and wireless handhelds) in the region, with more than 10 million units shipping in a quarter for the first time. Canalys research suggests that 10.1 million smart phones shipped in Q1 2007, along with 435,000 wireless handhelds and less than 150,000 handhelds. APAC remains the largest region for smart mobile devices, making up 46% of the global market, compared to 37% for EMEA and 17% for the Americas. Canalys puts total worldwide shipments at 23.2 million units in Q1 2007, up 39% from the 16.7 million shipped in the same quarter one year ago.

Japan's docomo, Renesas Technology, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric and Sharp Corp. have jointly announced that they will jointly develop a mobile phone platform combining a single-chip LSI for dual mode handsets supporting HSDPA /W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and core software such as operating systems. The new mobile phone platform will help accelerate the global adoption of W-CDMA services including FOMA, and lower the costs of these handsets. more
