Trinidad and Tobago to Award a 3rd Mobile Phone License

The telecoms regulator in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago has announced plans to award a 3rd mobile license in the country. The regulator says that the license will be for radio spectrum in both the 800Mhz and 1900Mhz bands, which leaves the market open to both GSM and CDMA operators.  more

Jamaican Operator Aiming for 3G Launch in November

Cable and Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) expects to launch its 3G network on 15th November, according to the company's senior vice-president of business sales, Leroy Reid. Jamaican Operator to Adopt Claro Brand

Jamaican mobile operator, MiPhone is to rebrand as Claro from Thursday this week - matching the branding from its parent company, America Movil. Oceanic Digital Jamaica, the parent company of MiPhone was brought by America Movil last year for US$70 million.  more

Ericsson deploys GSM/EDGE network for Digicel in Panama

Ericsson has signed a sole-supplier agreement with digicel Group for the nationwide deployment of a GSM/EDGE network in Panama. The value of the contract was not disclosed, although it was recently reported that digicel is planning to spend US$334 million on its Panama launch.  more

GSMA Launches Renewable Energy Push For Mobile Networks

The GSMA launched new project with the goal of helping the mobile industry use renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or sustainable biofuels, to power 118,000 new and existing off-grid base stations in developing countries by 2012. Achieving that target would save up to 2.5 billion litres of diesel per annum and cut annual carbon emissions by up to 6.3 million tonnes.  more

Digicel Plans $334 Million Investment in Panama

Pan-Caribeean mobile operator, digicel Group is planning to invest at least US$334 million in its new network in Panama - reports the Jamaica Observer newspaper. Citing a report by the International Finance Corporation's (IFC), the paper said that the mobile operator is daunted by the high cost of building out the required rural network in Panama.  more

Mexican Mobile Telephony Revenues Will Surpass $11.9 Billion Mark by 2013

Signals Telecom Consulting has published a report which examines the Mexican mobile services market with a focus on the Value Added Services (VAS) offered by local mobile operators. The report notes that the Mexican market is characterized by a VAS offering focused on SMS services. The slowdown in subscriber growth and the development of 3G networks, however, will force operators to aggressively pursue a VAS offering that is not focused on text messaging.  more

Papua New Guinea Sells 50% Stake in State Owned Mobile Operator
