Malaysian Operator Launches HSPA Enabled 3G Network

Malaysian mobile network operator, digi Telecommunications has launched its HSPA network - covering Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Sunway and Bangsar. Customers in other key areas of Klang Valley will be able to experience digi's broadband service within weeks. digi plans to cover more than 1,000 zones at a minimum of 5 market centres by the end of this year.  more

DiGi appoints new Chief Technology Officer

Ole Martin Gunhildsbu has been appointed by Malaysian mobile network, digi Telecommunications as its new Chief Technology Officer ("CTO") with immediate effect. He has been acting CTO since November 2008 when his predecessor left to take up a new role within the Telenor Group.  more

Grameenphone Fined For Using Illegal VoIP Services

Bangladesh based mobile operator, Grameenphone has agreed to pay an administrative fine of BDT 2500 million (US$37.3 million) to the telecoms regulator, the BTRC for providing E1 connectivity to third parties, enabling the use of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology which is unlawful and illegal.  more

New CEO for Malaysia's Digi

Malaysia's digi has appointed Mr. Johan Dennelind as the company's new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He will succeed Mr. Morten Lundal, who leaves digi on March 31st. Johan Dennelind has earlier served as both Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in digi. He has also been CFO, CMO and deputy CEO of Telenor Sweden.  more

Bangladesh Regulator Threatens to Suspend Grameenphone's License

Bangladesh's telecoms regulator, the BTRC has warned the country's largest mobile operator, Grameenphone that it faces losing its mobile phone license if it continues to use illegal VoIP services. The company has been given 30 days to reply to the formal notice from the regulator.  more

Telenor Reduces Malaysian Holding to Below 50%

Telenor has reduced its stake in Malaysian subsidiary digi.com in order to comply with the 49 per cent equity ownership requirement of the Malaysian Government. In a book building exercise Telenor on Wednesday sold 76.5 million shares in digi, constituting 10.2 per cent of the total issued share capital, at RM 21.5 per share to Malaysian investors for a total of RM 1,612.5 million (US$480 million).  more

Malaysia Sees Sharp Drop in Mobile Subscribers

Malaysia's prepaid registration programme came to an end in Q4 2006, during which time unregistered SIMs were disconnected from the networks of the country's three operators. In total there were almost 2.4m net disconnections between September and December, which implies that the total number of unregistered SIMs was nearer to 3m if normal organic growth in the quarter is assumed. more

Digi Profit Jumps 80%

Malaysia's digi has reported an 80% jump in profit after tax to RM566 (US$154) million for the nine months ended 30 September 2006. The 80% increase in the profit after tax (PAT) from the corresponding period last year was on the back of RM2.7 billion (US$735 million) revenue which rose by 31%. more
