India's MTNL Expects Up to 300,000 3G Subscribers by Year-End

India's Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) has set a fairly wide target of between 200,000-300,000 3G subscribers by the end of the year, the company's chairman and managing director said at a press conference to launch a new PrePay tariff. So far though, the company has signed up just 400 subscribers to its 3G network.  more

Alcatel-Lucent May be Back-Up Vendor to Huawei's Indian Contract

More confusion over BSNL's mammoth GSM network tender after it emerged that Alcatel-Lucent may be asked to act as a back-up vendor for the contract awarded to Huawei covering the southern end of the country. The telco was told by the Department of Telecoms to be particularly vigilant when testing Huawei supplied hardware to ensure there are no exploits in the software installed at the request of the Chinese government.  more

India's 3G License Auction Confirmed - Starts Jan 16th 2009

India's government has finalised the plans for its 3G and WiMAX auctions - with the 3G auctions starting on January 16th next year. Auctions for WiMAX licenses will commence two days after the 3G licenses are sold.  more

Indian Network "Soft-Launches" 3G Coverage in Delhi

India finally launched a 3G network today as state-controlled operator, Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) launched a WCDMA network in the capital city, delhi. The company is only offering a "soft-launch" though, and coverage is limited to the main business and political districts, Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, delhi Gate, and Minto Road.  more

India's BSNL to Launch 3G Network in Jan 2009

India's state owned mobile operator, BSNL will launch its 3G network in the north-eastern states and Chennai by January 2009, Communications and IT Minister A Raja has announced. The second state owned network to have a 3G license, MTNL is still on target to launch its 3G network in delhi and Mumbai.  more

BSNL - 6 Cos Have Bid For 93 Million GSM Lines Order

India to have 20 million broadband connection by 2010

While speaking at the inauguration of 4th Broadband Tech India 2007, Mr. G.S Grover, member Services, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications & IT said that the international call rates will drop down to the level of domestic calls rates in the near future due the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).The annual conference on broadband which is in it's fourth year was organised by Bharat Exhibitions.  more
