FOCUS: Wireless Operators' Defense Comes At High Cost

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Wireless telephony operators are slashing tariffs to neutralize Internet-based rivals trying to muscle in on their bread-and-butter business. In Sweden the offensive is being led by Tele2 and TeliaSonera whose per-minute charges are now among the lowest in Europe. These operators say they can still make money despite plummeting tariffs although there's a danger that sales could dip unless lower prices are offset by higher usage. For now, though, their aim is to ensure there's no economic case for customers to switch to the likes of eBay's Skype.  more

Motorola wins US$4 billion lawsuit

Motorola has won a US$4.26 billion judgment against the Uzan family of Turkey for perpetrating a massive fraud against Motorola. Further, Judge Rakoff found the defendants in contempt of court and ordered that: "unless and until defendants purge their contempts, the individual defendants, if found within the jurisdiction of the United States, will be immediately arrested and held in confinement until such time as they comply with the directives of the Court's" prior orders. more

Indosat increases its holding in Satelindo

Indonesia's Indosat has completed the acquisition of 100% of Bimagraha for US$372 million. Bimagraha is a holding company whose only substantial asset is a 45% shareholding in Satelindo. The acquisition of Bimagraha gives Indosat an effective controlling shareholding in Satelindo of 75%, although Indosat only holds legal title to 52.5% at this time. more

Spain's Amena may sell towers

The Spanish GSM network, Amena has said that it is considering selling part of its network infrastructure to help reduce debt. Amena's Chief Executive Belarmino Garcia told a press conference "We are looking into whether it makes sense to get value out of some of our network assets," commenting that the company expects to be able to sell some 4,000 of its 9,000 towers. Schroder Salomon Smith Barney and Credit Suisse First Boston have been recruited to prepare a sales portfolio. Spain's La Vanguardia newspaper suggested that the sale could earn Amena around US$318 million." more

Columbia studies PCS license options

The government of Colombia has said that it will study a banking report into the issuing of PCS licenses. Global Telecommunications Investment Group, Credit Suisse First Boston, local bank Inverlink, and law firm Holguin Neira y Pombo all worked together to crate the report for the government. Under existing plans, there will be three regional licenses, and companies will be allowed to bid for all three, in order to create a national footprint, if the bidders do not hold more than 30% of an existing cellular network. Blu looks to a future without 3G

Having failed to win a 3G license in Italy, the Italian GSM network, Blu has announced that it has asked Mediobanca and Credit Suisse First Boston to develop three or four ideas for the company's future growth. There has been some speculation in local media that Blu's shareholders are looking to sell the company to another telecoms group.
