Deutsche Telekom Posts Q1 Loss on T-Mobile Write Down
Germany's Deutsche Telekom has reported a net loss of EUR 1.1 billion (US$1.46 billion) for the first-quarter of this year, compared to a profit of EUR 900 million a year ago. The loss was largely blamed on an expected EUR 1.8 billion (US$2.4 billion) write-down on the valuation of T-Mobile UK. Adjusted profit was EUR 700 million (US$931 million), which is a 12.7% decline on the previous year, reflecting a slight downward trend in operational terms. more

OTE Sells Macedonian Mobile Network to Telekom Slovenia
Greece's OTE has sold its Macedonian subsidiaries, Cosmofon and Germanos Telekom Skopje to Telekom Slovenije for EUR190 million (US$251 million). The transaction is being processed through OTE's cosmote subsidiary, OTE MTS Holding. more

European Commission Welcoms Romania's Lower Termination Rates
The European Commission says that it has welcomed the Romanian telecoms regulator's move to bring its regulation of mobile termination rates in line with the forthcoming Commission Recommendation. In the meantime, the Commission also called on the regulator to align the mobile termination rates charged by the third and fourth mobile operators in Romania with those allowed for the two largest operators. A letter from The Commission acknowledged the reasonably low level of rates for the two largest operators (5.03 eurocents per minute) and said that in the absence of objective cost differences, this interim rate should also be applied to the other operators as soon as possible. more

Cosmote Increases Stake in Albanian Mobile Operator
Greek telco, cosmote has agreed to by the 12.6% stake of its Albanian subsidiary AMC, held by the Albanian government. The agreement was signed by cosmote Deputy CEO, Mr. Michael Tsamaz and Albania's Deputy Minister of National Economy, Mr. Enno Bozdo. more

Macedonia Offers Additional 3G Licenses
Macedonia's telecoms regulator, The Agency for Electronic Communications has announced plans to award three additional 3G licenses through a public tender. The licenses will be valid for just ten years - which is shorter than is usual for most countries which tend to award fifteen-year licenses. more

Romania's telecoms regulator, ANC (formerly Anrcti) has launched number portability in the country for both mobile and landline services. The ANC President a estimated that, in the first two years of number portability, approximately 20-25% of the mobile telephony numbers in Romania will be ported. more
