Telecom New Zealand Announces WCDMA Network Launch
Telecom New Zealand has announced the early launch of its WCDMA overlay of its existing CDMA network - for the 13th May. CEO Paul Reynolds said the development of the Telecom XT Mobile Network had progressed extremely well and the service will be operational across the country from launch day. more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-CDMA networks. more

Ericsson Wins 3-Year Indonesian GSM-3G Contracts
Ericsson has signed a three-year frame agreement with Indonesian mobile operator, Telekomunikasi Selular Indonesia (Telkomsel), to supply, deploy and integrate GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA radio access networks (RAN) in Indonesia. more

picoChip Shows Off Chinese 3G Standard Femtocell
picoChip has shown off a TD-SCDMA based femtocell software reference design in China, and announced that Digimoc, a Chinese provider of femtocells, as its first publicly disclosed TD-SCDMA customer. Digimoc is using picoChip's PC202 device and PHY software reference design in its femtocell product. more

Ericsson Wins 3G Contract in Northern Cyprus
Ericsson has won a contract in Turkish Cyprus from Kuzey Kibris Turkcell - a subsidiary of Turkcell - as the sole supplier of a WCDMA/HSPA network. Under the agreement Ericsson will provide a WCDMA/HSPA network, including radio access and packet core network and the Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solution. more

Canada's Two CDMA Networks Planning a Migration to WCDMA
Two of Canada's mobile network operators, Bell and Telus are reported to be planning a joint network upgrade which would allow them to offer services based on a WCDMA platform. Ericsson expands SÃminn's WCDMA network into 900MHz band
Ericsson has formed a partnership with Icelandic operator SÃminn through a contract to expand its WCDMA/HSPA network into the 900MHz band - for the rural and remote parts of the country. Under the two-year agreement, Ericsson will be the sole supplier of WCDMA/HSPA radio access equipment and the GSM/WCDMA common core network. more

Telstra Activates "3G Direct Tunnel" on its HSDPA Network
Australia's Telstra has activated an important new feature for the Mobile Packet Core network called 3G Direct Tunnel on their WCDMA/HSPA network. The equipment for this was provided by Ericsson. The 3G Direct Tunnel feature provides a direct connection between the 3G networks RNC (Radio Network Controller) and GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), hence capacity increase to Telstra's mobile packet core network. more
