Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract
Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-CDMA networks. more

World's First Femtocell Standard Published by 3GPP
Three trade bodies, The Femto Forum, 3GPP and the Broadband Forum have jointly announced that the world's first femtocell standard has been officially published by 3GPP, paving the way for interoperability between different vendors' access points and femto gateways. The new standard, which forms part of 3GPP's Release 8, and interdependent with Broadband Forum extensions to its Technical Report-069 (TR-069), has been completed in just 12 months following cooperation between the three groups. more

Cisco Powers Mobile WiMAX Network in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Russia's Scartel (trading as Yota) has launched a Mobile WiMAX network within the Sadovoye Ring in Moscow and at the Vassilyevsky Island and Petrogradsky District in St. Petersburg. The entire Yota core transport network is powered by Cisco service provider technologies. more

Cisco to Deploy WiMAX Network in Malaysia
YTL e-Solutions Berhad (YTLE) says that it has entered into a collaboration with Cisco to establish its WiMAX core network in Peninsular Malaysia. Under the agreement, Cisco will build and integrate YTLE's WiMAX core network -- which includes IP CORE, Operating Support Systems, Billing Systems, Proactive Network Operating Center (PNOC), and Interoperability Testing labs. The business relationship is in line with YTLE's goal to provide mobile internet services nationwide. more

Sucessful Trials of SIP-I for Voice Calls on GSM Networks
The GSM Association has completed successful trials of voice calls based on the SIP-I protocol between core networks supplied by Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks. Hosted by TeliaSonera in their Finnish and Swedish laboratories, the trials are a significant step towards the use of SIP-I to control the transmission of packet-based voice between mobile networks. more

The Femto Forum, the independent industry association that supports femtocell deployment worldwide, has launched a programme to help harmonise the integration of femtocells into mobile core networks. Operator demand to launch femtocells quickly has led to the development of many different methods for integrating potentially millions of femtocells into the network core. Although this is not holding up the commercial deployment of femtocells, this programme will help unite these different approaches in the longer term and set the stage for the development of future standards. more
